About this course

This course has been adapted from the CalTrin-hosted webinar, Trauma, Parenting, and Challenging Behaviors (School-Age), presented by Melissa Bernstein, PhD on March 30, 2023. Effectively managing behavioral challenges in school-age children can be difficult for parents and caregivers, especially when the child has experienced a traumatic event.  This course will provide foundational information on the impact of trauma on parenting and review strategies for helping caregivers identify and respond to challenging behaviors for school-age children exposed to trauma.

In this course we will:

  1. Explore the impact of trauma on school-age children
  2. Explain how to better collaborate with caregivers of traumatized school-age children
  3. Identify strategies to support caregivers in addressing challenging behaviors and trauma reactions

Featured Presenter: Melissa Bernstein, PhD

In her role at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, Melissa Bernstein, PhD, directs the Advancing California’s Trauma-Informed Systems (ACTS) and Trauma-Informed Licensing Team (TILT) initiatives. Her research centers around supporting systems in planning for, implementing, and sustaining Trauma-Informed change that aligns with best practice and science. 

As a psychologist working with children, youth, and families impacted by traumatic stress, she has developed expertise in understanding child trauma and utilizing evidence-based practices at the individual, family, and system levels.
